Seven Up

Newry City Reserves 7 Annagh United Reserves 1

The game was only 2 minutes old when Micky McCaughey forced a great save from the Annagh keeper. He then supplied a great cross for Neil Barr who headed just over. Annagh were struggling to get into the game with Chris McMahon and Conor Sloan pulling the strings in midfield. Neil Barr provided a lovely through ball for John Smyth to run onto with his shot being saved but Mickey McCaughey was on hand to follow up and make it 1 0. The Annagh keeper was keeping his side in it at this stage with further saves from Neil Barr and Owen Donaghy. Daniel Hughes then made it 2 0 on his return from injury, volleying home after the keeper failed to hold a John Smyth corner. The same player made it 3 0 when he headed home at the near post from another corner. Annagh pulled a goal back just before half-time when Newry failed to deal with a right wing cross.

Newry started the second half in positive mood and denied Annagh any real attacking opportunities. Kevin Cummins was continuing his great form at the centre of defence alongside the equally impressive Jamie Edgar. Neil Barr made it 4 1 from the penalty spot after John Smyth had been taken down in the area by the Annagh keeper. The same player made it 5 1 shortly after following a quick free from Daniel Hughes. John Smyth then got in on the scoring when he headed in a great cross from Chris McMahon. Daniel Rowney pulled off a good save towards the end of the game in what was a good debut for the young keeper. Colin Cunningham then finished the scoring at 7 1 when he side footed past the keeper after being put through by the impressive Jemar Hall.

This win lifts Newry Reserves into third in the league with three games in hand. It follows an impressive 6 1 friendly win against Portadown Reserves last Tuesday night.
